Choosing the Right Board.

The substrate you choose affects print quality, structural performance, retail presentation, and cost. Here's how the three most common folding carton boards compare — and where each one excels. These three are the workhorses, not the whole menu: we also run other substrates including poly-coated, kraft, chip, plus micro-flute corrugated, when the application calls for them.

Common Carton Styles.

Auto-Bottom

The bottom is glued in advance and locks itself the moment the carton squares up — no flaps to fold, nothing to assemble. The go-to style where product is packed and filled by hand: the packer pops the carton open and the bottom is already done. Strong enough for heavier products, too.

Snap-Lock Bottom

Four flaps fold in sequence and snap locked — the fold pattern is why the trade also calls this a 1-2-3 bottom. With no bottom glue pass it costs less to produce than an auto-bottom; the trade is a few extra seconds of assembly per carton.

Dry grocery and cereal packaging is one of the most demanding folding carton applications — high print quality, tight color consistency across long runs, and structural integrity that survives distribution and stands up straight on shelf. It's also one of the highest-volume categories in the industry, where press efficiency and substrate selection directly impact cost.

Seal end cartons dominate the category. Reverse tucks are common on smaller footprints, and tuck top auto-bottoms show up at lower volumes where the carton is hand-erected rather than machine-formed. CRB is the standard substrate for cost-efficient programs, with SBS the choice when premium shelf presence is the priority. CUK — also called SUS or CustomKote — comes into play where added strength or a natural kraft look is wanted. Tight color management is essential in this category — retail buyers notice when brand colors drift between production runs.

Frozen Food

Frozen food packaging must do something most folding cartons never face: survive repeated temperature swings, moisture exposure from condensation, and rough handling through distribution — and still look sharp in the freezer case. Board selection and coating specification are critical decisions that directly affect carton performance in the cold chain.

Seal end construction is the dominant format for frozen meals, entrees, and side dishes — wide, shallow boxes that slide easily into freezer cases and provide a large front panel for high-impact graphics. CUK is the preferred substrate for cold chain performance, with SBS a viable alternative where a bright white print surface leads the spec; moisture-resistant aqueous coatings protect board integrity through the freeze-thaw cycle.

Premium finishing · Tight registration

Health and wellness packaging carries a heavy regulatory and informational load — supplement panels, claims language, lot and date coding — and it competes in a category where the carton itself is read as evidence of product quality. Color accuracy and print sharpness aren’t cosmetic here; they’re doing trust work before anyone reads a label.

The tall, narrow straight tuck that dominates the category exists for a reason: more facings per shelf foot, and one uninterrupted front panel for finishing to work on. Those finishes rarely travel alone — foil over emboss, spot UV against soft-touch — and stacked effects live or die on registration: the print has to land exactly where the tooling expects it, every carton, or the effect reads as a flaw instead of a finish.

The ready-to-drink alcohol and beverage market has driven significant demand for folding carton multipacks — and for good reason. A well-engineered carrier does more than hold cans or bottles together. It's a high-visibility billboard at retail, a structural workhorse through the supply chain, and a brand experience the consumer interacts with directly.

RTD multipack carriers are typically built as a fully enclosed seal end wrap — a single printed paperboard blank that wraps the cans and seals at both ends, carrying the brand graphics on every face. The configuration includes integrated finger holes for easy carrying, perforated tear panels for individual can access, and sometimes a die-cut handle for larger packs. 4-pack, 6-pack, 8-pack, and 12-pack configurations are all common, and each requires precise dieline engineering to ensure the carrier runs cleanly on high-speed packaging lines.

Choosing the Right Window Film.

Graph-Pak's window patching machine applies clear plastic windows in a wide range of sizes — from small product-view cutouts to large display panels. The film material you choose affects clarity, food contact suitability, recyclability, and cost. Here's how the two most common options compare.

The most widely used window film in folding carton applications. Polypropylene offers excellent clarity, strong moisture resistance, and broad compatibility with food packaging requirements. It's cost-efficient, widely available, and the default choice for most retail windowed cartons.

Cellulose Acetate Film

Acetate produces exceptional optical clarity — often described as glass-like — and is preferred for premium applications where product presentation is paramount. It has a higher cost than polypropylene and is more sensitive to moisture, but delivers a visual quality that's difficult to match for high-end retail packaging.

Our window patching machine handles a wide range of window sizes — from small product-view cutouts to large display panels spanning most of the carton face. Consult our structural design team for size constraints based on your specific carton configuration.

Food Contact Considerations

Both PP and acetate are available in food-contact approved grades. If your product will be in direct or indirect contact with the window film, specify food-contact grade material when requesting your quote. Our team will confirm compliance with your application requirements.

Sustainability Notes

Polypropylene film is generally considered more recyclable than acetate in most municipal streams — though whether a finished windowed carton is accepted for recycling depends on the construction and the local program. If your brand has recyclability or sustainability commitments that affect packaging specifications, discuss film selection with our team early in the structural design process.

Do you have order minimums?
We don't have a hard minimum that applies across the board. Minimums vary depending on the carton style, substrate, and print configuration. The best approach is to contact us with your project details — we'll give you a straight answer about what makes sense for your specific program.
What are your typical lead times?
Standard production runs three to four weeks from approved proof to shipment; a first-time program typically lands at four to six weeks from approved artwork once proofing and new tooling are folded in. Reorders on existing tooling move faster. And if your supplier slipped and the clock is against you, call first — this company was built scrappy, and we're often at our best when time is tight.
Can you produce both short runs and high-volume programs?
Yes. Our 41" press is optimized for shorter, more complex runs, while our 57" large-format press is built for efficiency at high volume. We serve emerging brands running tens of thousands of units alongside established accounts running millions — and we apply the same quality standards to both.
Do you offer warehousing and scheduled release?
Yes. Finished cartons can stay in our warehouse and release against your schedule — just-in-time style — so you order the volume that prices well without carrying the floor space to store it, and your lines keep running without interruption.
Do you provide structural design and prototyping services?
Yes — all in-house. Our structural design team can engineer a custom dieline from scratch, adapt an existing style to your product specs, and produce physical prototypes for fit and fill testing before you commit to a production run. We also review every dieline against your filling line specifications to avoid downstream issues.
What file formats do you accept for artwork?
We prefer PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 files, but also accept native Adobe Illustrator (AI) or packaged InDesign (INDD) files. All artwork should be in CMYK with a minimum 1/8" bleed on all sides. See our full file submission guidelines above for complete specs.
Are you certified for food packaging?
Yes. Graph-Pak is ISO 9001:2015 certified and our production follows HACCP and GMP practices for food safety. We manufacture packaging for major food and consumer goods brands and our facilities and processes are designed to meet the stringent quality and safety requirements of the food packaging industry.
Can you run FSC or SFI certified board?
Yes — we can run FSC- and SFI-certified board, and we will identify the certified grade on your quote; certified board can support your fiber-sourcing goals even without the logo. What we can’t currently do is put the FSC or SFI logo on the carton itself; that piece requires chain-of-custody certification, which we don’t hold today — demand for the on-pack mark has been rare across our customer base. If a program needs the logo, tell us early and we will scope the reinstatement audit around your timeline.
What if you don’t hold a certification we require?
Graph-Pak has always acquired the certifications we need to support current and future customers — that’s how the current list got built, and it doesn’t stop here. Today we hold ISO 9001:2015 and NMSDC MBE certification, carry an EcoVadis Bronze Medal, and run HACCP/GMP food-safety practices. If your program requires a certification you don’t see here, ask us about it: tell us the requirement and the timeline, and we’ll scope what it takes.
How do you prevent mixed copy errors on multi-SKU programs?
All of our folder-gluers are equipped with barcode scanners that read and verify each carton at production speed. A mismatched barcode — a wrong SKU in the run — isn’t just detected: the carton is ejected from the line automatically, so a mixed copy never makes it into a case. This is particularly important for brands running multiple SKUs, regional variations, or seasonal packaging changes simultaneously.
How do you ensure consistent glue quality throughout a run?
We run Leary glue control systems on our folder-gluers, which continuously monitor glue temperature, viscosity, and application throughout every production run. A carton that doesn’t meet the glue spec isn’t just detected — it’s ejected from the line automatically, so an out-of-spec carton never makes it into a case, onto your filling line, or into the field.
How do you detect missing windows on windowed carton programs?
We have automated window detection on windowed carton programs that inspects every carton for the presence of its window before it leaves the production line. A carton missing its window would be invisible in a sealed shipping case but highly visible — and problematic — at retail. We catch it before it ships.
What is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and how does it affect my packaging?
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a regulatory framework that holds brands financially and operationally responsible for the end-of-life management of their packaging. EPR programs are already well-established in Canada, the EU, and several US states including California, Colorado, Maine, and Oregon — and more states are moving in this direction. For brands selling into regulated markets, EPR has real implications for how packaging is designed, what materials are used, and how fees are calculated based on recyclability. Graph-Pak can support your EPR compliance efforts by providing material composition documentation, substrate selection guidance relative to recyclability thresholds, and structural design input that can affect how your packaging is classified under EPR schemes. We don't provide regulatory or legal counsel on EPR — for that you'll need a compliance consultant or attorney familiar with the specific regulations in your markets. But we understand the packaging side of EPR and can be a knowledgeable partner as you work through it.
Can Graph-Pak provide material composition data for EPR reporting?
Yes. We can provide detailed material composition documentation for your folding carton packaging — board grade, coating types, window film material, adhesive type, and other relevant components. This information is often required for EPR fee calculations and recyclability assessments. If your brand or your EPR compliance consultant needs specific documentation, contact your Graph-Pak customer service representative and we'll work with you to provide what's needed.
